New talk: Alison Dickens (CAS President) on The Extraordinary Ordinary: Community Archaeology at the David Parr House 186 Gwydir Street, Cambridge
In September 2018 an enthusiastic team of volunteers took part in excavating the back garden of the David Parr House on Gwydir Street, Cambridge. Sixteen test pits were dug over three days and their contents sieved, washed and studied, revealing a fascinating range of objects from prehistoric flint and late Saxon pottery to 20th century childhood memorabilia. This talk reveals what was uncovered then and has been discovered since, looking at both the history and development of not only Gwydir Street, but also this part of Cambridge. The work was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Alison Dickens is Director of Granta Heritage, having worked in Cambridgeshire archaeology for almost 30 years. At the time of the excavation she was a Senior Manager at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit and Director of Access Cambridge Archaeology, which ran the community excavations together with the David Parr House.
